World Mental Health Day

10th October marks World Mental Health Day, a chance to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and remind ourselves that looking after our mental health is just as important as caring for our physical health.

This year’s theme is about ensuring that everyone has access to the support and resources they need, whether that’s professional help, self-care tools, or simply someone to talk to.

Why mental health matters

Mental health affects how we think, feel, and act. It influences our relationships, how we handle stress, and how we make decisions. Yet many people still struggle in silence, often unsure where to turn, or afraid to speak up.

But the truth is, we all have mental health, and we all benefit from nurturing it. Whether you’re dealing with a specific challenge or just feeling a little off, there is help available, and it’s okay to ask for it.

Simple ways to support your mental health

  • Talk to someone you trust – You don’t need to have all the answers. Just being heard can be a huge relief.
  • Take breaks – Rest is essential for your brain and nervous system to reset.
  • Move your body – Even gentle activity like walking can lift your mood.
  • Get enough sleep – Prioritising rest helps regulate emotions and reduces overwhelm.
  • Reach out for support – Whether it’s a GP, helpline, counsellor or workplace support, you don’t have to go it alone.
