DSE & Workstation Assessments

If your employees use screens for more than an hour a day, you have a legal obligation to assess their workstation. The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 are clear. Failure to comply exposes you to HSE enforcement action and more practically, to a workforce developing avoidable neck, back, shoulder and eye strain problems that drive up absence and reduce productivity.

With hybrid and remote working now standard, the challenge has shifted. It’s no longer just about the office. You need to assess home setups, hot desks and multi-location workers. Our DSE assessment service covers all of these, providing detailed reports with practical recommendations that protect your employees and demonstrate your compliance.

Assessment options

Standard DSE Assessment

A qualified assessor evaluates the employee’s workstation setup, posture, screen position, chair height, lighting and peripheral equipment. Adjustments that can be made immediately are implemented on the spot. A detailed report follows with further recommendations.

Home Worker Assessment

Employees working from home are covered by the same DSE regulations. We assess the home workspace via video consultation or face-to-face visit, documenting the setup and recommending practical improvements. Particularly important for employees reporting neck, back or eye strain.

Complex or Clinical Referral

For employees with existing MSK conditions, disabilities or specific clinical needs, we provide a more detailed ergonomic assessment. This may involve input from our Workplace Physiotherapy & MSK services or Occupational Health services teams to ensure recommendations address both the workstation and the underlying health condition.

What you receive

  • Individual assessment reports: Detailed findings for each employee assessed, including current risks, adjustments made and equipment recommendations.
  • Compliance evidence: Documented proof that you have fulfilled your DSE obligations in line with HSE DSE guidance. Audit-ready records for HSE inspections. Findings can also inform wider Health Surveillance programmes where workplace exposures or repetitive strain risks are identified.
  • Cost-effective recommendations: We recommend solutions proportionate to the risk. Not every employee needs a £400 ergonomic chair. Sometimes a monitor riser and a posture conversation is all it takes.
  • Integration with OH: If an assessment reveals an underlying health issue, the referral into our SEQOHS-accredited Onsite Occupational Health services or physiotherapy pathway is direct. No separate process, no information lost in translation. One clinical governance framework covering everything from the workstation to the treatment plan.

FAQs

When an employee starts using DSE, when their workstation changes, when they report symptoms, or when they move to home or hybrid working. There is no fixed annual requirement but good practice is to reassess at least when circumstances change.

Yes. The regulations apply wherever habitual DSE use takes place. If your employees work from home regularly, you must assess that workspace. Our virtual assessment option makes this practical and cost-effective.

Yes. Video-based DSE assessments are effective for most standard workstations. Face-to-face assessments are recommended for complex cases or employees with clinical conditions.

We offer a scaled model. Self-assessment questionnaires completed by employees are reviewed by a qualified assessor, who then triages those needing a full individual assessment. This is cost-efficient for large workforces and ensures the employees at greatest risk are prioritised.

Qualified DSE assessors operating within MCL’s SEQOHS-accredited clinical governance framework. For complex cases involving MSK conditions or disability, assessments involve our physiotherapy or Occupational Health teams to ensure recommendations are clinically informed. We have been delivering workplace health and safety services for UK employers since 1999, operating within MCL’s SEQOHS-accredited clinical governance framework.
